Thanks to the analyst guys over at Bloomberg, we now have some official numbers for Playstation's take on the Wiimote, the Playstation Move.
The device, to date, has sold 1.8 Million units around the world. That number takes into account both single units and units packaged with consoles and other bundles. The motion controller is similar to Nintendo's Wiimote, and features an add-on incredibly similar to Nintendo's Nunchuck add-on. The controllers have been available since September 19th, roughly one month of release.
While 1.8 Million units sold is a fantastic number for the company, who is competing out of the gate with Nintendo's four year old device, it appears to be a bit deceiving. 1.5 Million of those units were sold in Europe alone, leaving the remaining 300,000 as America's total purchased thus far. In comparison, the Wii sold over 3 Million units in its first month of release (granted, it kicked off the holiday season back in 2006).
Sony views the 300,000 units as a success, and is trying its best to keep up with the demand for the controllers in Europe. The holiday season will prove to be interesting for the motion-interested gamer, as Microsoft's Kinect (a remote-free motion controlling system add-on) launches on November 4th. The launch will put all three of the 'next-gen' consoles with motion controls, something analyst believed would happen much sooner than this.
