An official announcement hit this morning that there will be some sort of Star Wars announcement at CES this week.
With all tech eyes on CES, which kicks things off on Thursday, an interesting announcement hit the airwaves today regarding sci-fi's biggest blockbusters; Star Wars. The announcement, which does little to give away any information as to what this will be about, appeared online this morning. Below it appears in its entirety.
The Empire is headed to Vegas, baby.
Darth Vader, accompanied by a legion of his finest Imperial troops, will address emissaries from "a galaxy far, far away" for a most impressive announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show - Thursday, January 6th at 11:30 AM PST Panasonic Booth #9408.
Be prepared… The Force is strong with this one
So, lets break down some speculation. First of all, the last time Vader appeared at CES it was back in 2008 for the Soul Calibur 4 game which starred both Vader and Yoda. Could this be for yet another video game induction of the infamous villain? There are a handful of video games in development involving the Star Wars franchise (Star Wars: The Old Republic, Star Wars Untitled Kinect Game) and the appearance could be for any of them.
But, the announcement specifically states that the appearance will be at the Panasonic booth, which raises some interesting red flags. First off, the Star Wars Blu-Ray was announced a couple months ago with a due-date of Fall 2011. It seems a bit premature, but the Dark Lord could be appearing to help hype the first release of the classic series in hi-def.
Last year, Panasonic won the crowd over with its use of 3D technology, sharing and showcasing their 3D plasma television. It's likely that this year Panasonic will have even more to do with home-theater 3D use, which leaves plenty of speculation regarding Star Wars and 3D. It's been rumored for some time now that Lucas has been working on re-cuts of both the original and new trilogy for the 3D format, so could this appearance be in regard to a theatrical, or home, 3D release of Star Wars?
As we said, speculation is running wild at the moment, which is no doubt what Lucas intended with the official announcement. For the next four days, we're left with nothing but wild guesses, hopes, and dreams.
What do you hope the appearance means? Anxious for a Star Wars 3D release? Or would you prefer a Star Wars Kinect game?
