WarGames, one of the few sacred movies about hacking, is getting a reboot.
WarGames is an 80's classic, starring Matthew Broderick as a young computer hacker who accidentally convinces a sophisticated computer AI to play a real life game of 'Global Thermonuclear War.'
Director Seth Gordon has signed on to direct the film, who was last seen directing the true story of dueling video game high-scorers in The King of Kong. Gordon seems like an inspired choice, clearly having a gaming background and an interesting connection to the gaming world.
An updated version of the original seems like a bad idea, especially because of how well the original still holds up. The movie is an amazing relfection of the times, featuring reasonable hacking tricks and a paranoid 1980's government. The bliss of watching smart teenagers adapt to their changing world highlights the film, and it's a bit hard to believe that the youth of this generation could get so innocently wrapped up in such a case.
A sequel, War Games 2: The Dead Code was created back in 2008 and received horrible reviews. Minor connections to major characters from the original are found within, but the technology and threat there of simply doesn't hold up by todays standards.
No release year has been announced.
