Even with the Super Bowl, this weekend proved to be a lucrative endeavor for Chronicle and The Woman in Black, both of which opened with over $20 million.
In fact, it's the first time that two movies have opened with over $20 million on a Super Bowl weekend. Not a bad feat for the former Mr. Potter and a bunch of unknowns in a found footage flick.
In comparison with other movies of the same ilk, Chronicle didn't top other found footage efforts like Cloverfield or The Devil Inside, but considering the strong reviews and found-footigue, it's a success.
The Woman in Black also opened well, proving that audiences weren't going to shy away from Radcliffe outside of Hogwarts. The Woman in Black marks the largest opening for CBS films (The Back Up Plan - $12 million), and even though their films still look like an episode of CSI in terms of cinematography, it's a nice win for the company.
Other notes include Big Miracle not matching the same tally as Dolphin Tale managed, and One for the Money plummeting faster than The Lincoln Lawyer (a. k. a The Groupon Movie) did in week two of its release.
The Descendants once again put forth a solid total, bring the Oscar darling to $65 million in earnings so far.
